Fireworks - Fun or Fear?

‘Enjoy fireworks safely’, is the message being promoted in a new campaign called Operation Guy Fawkes. Backed by the Safer Stockport Partnership, a partner organisation which includes Stockport Council, Greater Manchester Police, the Fire Service, Stockport Primary Care and NHS Trusts, the campaign aims to encourage the safe use of fireworks and to crackdown on firework misuse in public places.

A special fireworks hotline, on 0845 644 4315, will be open from 15th October. It will offer information on local events, advice on how to organise your own firework event following the firework safety code, and advice for pet owners on animal safety. Anyone who is concerned about the misuse of fireworks, can also call the hotline.

The partners behind the campaign will investigate reports of dangerous use of fireworks. This includes the sale of unsafe fireworks or the sale of fireworks to young people - it is illegal to sell fireworks to people under the age of eighteen.

The hotline will be live from 15th October to 7th November from 8am to 5pm. Outside these hours and at weekends, a recorded message will provide contact information. Councillor Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council said:

“This is the first time that Stockport Council, the Fire Service, Greater Manchester Police, Stockport NHS and Primary Care Trusts have worked in partnership to promote firework safety. “Fireworks are great fun, but they can also be dangerous if they are not used properly. We hope that by working together we can help prevent accidents with fireworks. We also want to warn people that making a nuisance with fireworks is unfair on others and will not be tolerated. Any reports of people causing a nuisance will be taken very seriously.”

The safer Stockport Partnership, which includes Stockport Council, the Fire Service, Greater Manchester Police, Stockport NHS and Primary Care Trusts, launches the firework safety campaign.
